WHAT IS OAK WILT?
Oak wilt is a deadly fungal disease that is a threat to all oak trees which are plentiful in Churchill Estates.
WHY SHOULD I CARE?
The majority of oak trees with oak wilt do not survive. Treatment is costly and may not work. Removal of dead trees is also costly. Fewer oak trees or dead ones not removed from properties affect the aesthetics of a neighborhood and decrease property value. Prevention is the key.
PREVENT NEW INFECTIONS WITH 4 SIMPLE STEPS:
1. AVOID – Avoid pruning oak trees February 1 – June 30, when beetles are most active and fungal mats produce spores.
2. DISINFECT – Disinfect pruning tools prior to cutting. Use an all-purpose household disinfectant or denatured alcohol.
3. PAINT – Paint wounds immediately with latex or commercial tree wound paint. Paint minimizes exposure to beetles.
4. HIRE – Hire only qualified professionals who have a tree maintenance license through the City of San Antonio.
